Crested hedgehog

Polysaccharides of the combed hedgehog neutralize the action of gastric acid, protecting the stomach walls from its effects in the presence of an ulcerative surface, stimulate the regeneration of the gastric mucosa, promote the healing of ulcers on the inner surface of the food tract. They also improve blood circulation in the digestive organs, stimulate absorption in the stomach and intestines, enhance peristalsis, and prevent the development of tumor processes in the alimentary canal.

In addition, mushroom polysaccharides stimulate the body’s immunity, reduce fatigue and lower the lipid content in the blood.

In laboratory conditions, when studying the medicinal properties of mushroom extract, its active components were identified: cyatan derivatives, erinacins, gericenones, β-D-glucans, ergosterol. Hedgehog contains 5 different antitumor polysaccharides, as well as other antitumor substances — phenols and fatty acids, which act directly on cancer cells, as with chemotherapy.

According to the results of clinical trials, ezhovik has been shown to be effective in benign and malignant tumors: fibroids, fibroids, cysts, pituitary adenomas, prostate adenomas, esophageal cancer, stomach cancer, lung cancer, liver, breast cancer. Positive dynamics was observed in oncological diseases: tumors in patients significantly decreased in size, some malignant tumors completely resolved. The most promising is the use of mushroom extract for pancreatic cancer, since this type of cancer is difficult to treat with traditional methods.

In Russia, the antitumor effect of the combed hedgehog was studied by specialists from the G.F. Gauze State Research Institute for the Study of New Antibiotics of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences and the N.D. Zelinsky Institute of Organic Chemistry. Laboratory mice were inoculated with two tumors — EL-4 T-lymphoma and P388 T-cell lymphocytic leukemia, and then an aqueous extract of the fungus was injected into them. It was proved that the aqueous extract of the mushroom has a pronounced statistically significant independent antitumor effect against both studied tumors. The antitumor effect consisted in inhibiting tumor growth and prolonging the life of animals.

Korean researchers have found that substances of water and alcohol extracts of the crested hedgehog activate macrophages and increase their synthesis of nitric oxide and cytokine expression.

In oncological practice, mushroom extract can be used both as monotherapy and in the combined treatment of oncological diseases, in such cases, the extract is perfectly combined with chemotherapy and radiation, removing the negative symptoms of undergoing such procedures.

Additionally, the comb hedgehog activates T- and B-lymphocytes of the immune system, increasing the growth rate of lymphocytes twice and increasing their number three times from the original.

Gericenone and erinacin E isolated from the mycelial extract proved to be powerful stimulators of the synthesis of nerve cell growth factor (NGF protein, necessary for the brain to develop and preserve important sensory neurons), which immediately made them a potential drug for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Thus, erinacin E and gericenone can restore the nervous tissue of the brain and restore the functioning of neurons. That is why the mushroom is now being increasingly used as a nootropic drug.

Aqueous and alcoholic extracts of the fungus have shown antibacterial action, suppressing the growth of pathogenic Staphylococcus aureus and Helicobacter pylori, as well as antifungal in relation to Aspergillus niger.

In oriental medicine, it is used for neurasthenia, insomnia, impotence, to restore the nervous system, as a stimulator of growth and regeneration of nerve cell processes, as an effective antiseptic and immunostimulator, sometimes used to treat atrophic gastritis, bronchitis and lung diseases.
